Tee Up! Hone Your Golf Game in Upstate New York
Get your daily dose of iron and plan a cross-border golf trip to Upstate New York!
Okay, that was a little cheesy. But in all seriousness, with just a short drive across the border and into NY, you will find that golf courses are plentiful and prime for play. In fact, we have over 60 semi-private and public courses within just 45 minutes of Rochester – and even more as you continue deeper into the Finger Lakes and Central New York.
Starting in the Genesee County/Batavia area, closest to the Canadian border, there are five beautiful courses to enjoy – all of which are currently offering golf packages that include choice of overnight accommodations for two at area hotels, breakfast at the hotel, 18-holes of golf, lunch at the turn, and $25 free play at Batavia Downs Casino per person. Choose from LeRoy Country Club, Batavia Country Club, Chestnut Hill Country Club, Stafford Country Club, or Terry Hills Golf Course for your packaged play. Terry Hills’ 27-hole course is consistently ranked by Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” as one of the Top 5 Public Golf Courses in Western New York. In 2015 it was also named the “Best Public Golf Course in Buffalo-Niagara” by buffalogolfer.com. For less experienced golfers (like myself!), Terry Hills offers an 18-hole mini golf course.
A little to the east, Rochester, NY ranks as the #10 Best Golf City in the U.S. and #1 in Golf Affordability by Golf.com. The city hosted LPGA and PGA Championships in the past, and has great offerings on its Finger Lakes Golf Trail – featuring four of the area’s best semiprivate and public courses: Ravenwood Golf Club, Mill Creek Golf Club, Greystone Golf Club, and Bristol Harbour Lodge & Golf Club – which features an 18-hole, Robert Trent Jones championship course.
I’m also a fan of Woodcliff Hotel & Spa for golf in Rochester, NY. It has a 9-hole course (perfect for a shorter playing time), and the resort offers other great amenities to complement your stay, including an on-site spa, indoor/outdoor pool and hot tub, dry sauna, fitness center, restaurant, and guestrooms including luxury, two-story suites. And the view of the Rochester Skyline can’t be beat.
For the entire golf resort experience, you can’t miss a visit to the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY. The 18-hole course comes with a practice golf dome – a seven-story, indoor area with 40 hitting stations arranged in a two-story structure. Outside of the course however, the resort is the epitome of nightlife in Central New York. The Turning Stone houses 10 themed restaurants, a night club, several showrooms, an event center, overnight accommodations, a spa, fitness center, and full casino floor (2,000 slot machines, poker room, table games, bingo and keno). It’s easy to make a single trip to Turning Stone a full weekend getaway – or add it to an already planned New York vacation.
Pack the clubs and start exploring the site for more courses, getaway packages and Upstate New York attractions.
